How to play Wordle
Wordle gives you six tries to guess a hidden five-letter word. After each guess, every tile flips to tell you how close you are. A green tile means the letter is correct and in the right spot, yellow means the letter is in the word but in a different position, and grey means the letter isn't in the word at all.
Example
The same word is given to every player worldwide each day, and you can play free once a day on the official site. Read our complete beginner's guide for rules, hard mode, and streak tips.
Best starting words
We scored every valid five-letter word against the letter positions of all 1,800+ past Wordle answers. These five openers consistently reveal the most information on the first guess:

| 1 | SOARE | Positional score 1,275 across all past answers |
| 2 | SAINE | Positional score 1,224 across all past answers |
| 3 | SLANE | Positional score 1,220 across all past answers |
| 4 | SAICE | Positional score 1,198 across all past answers |
| 5 | SLATE | Positional score 1,188 across all past answers |

Three tips that actually help
Tip 1
Start vowel-heavy. The five most common letters in past answers are E, A, R, O, T — a first guess that covers two vowels plus R, S, or T eliminates the most possibilities.
Tip 2
Don't reuse grey letters. Every guess should test five letters you're still unsure about — re-guessing a letter you know is out wastes one of your six chances.
Tip 3
Watch for doubles. Nearly one answer in three repeats a letter, so when the board stalls, test words with double letters like LL, EE, or OO before you run out of rows.

Wordle today: your complete daily companion
Every day, millions of players open the New York Times app with one question: what is the Wordle today? This page exists to answer that — on your terms. Below, you'll find the Wordle today answer hidden behind spoiler-safe reveals, five progressive hints that nudge you toward the solution without giving it away, a letter-by-letter peek, and free tools including a Wordle solver, the complete archive of past answers, and an unlimited practice game. Everything updates automatically, every day, for every timezone.
What is the Wordle today?
Wordle is the daily five-letter word game published by The New York Times. Every midnight, a new puzzle goes live in your local timezone — the same word for every player on that calendar date, numbered sequentially since puzzle #0 in June 2021. Today's puzzle is #1863 (July 26, 2026). You can play Wordle today free on the official NYT Games website, and when you're stuck — or just curious — come back here for hints, the answer, and a breakdown of what made the word tricky.
Wordle today hints that never spoil the answer
Most hint sites print the solution in plain sight — sometimes right inside their Google snippet. We built the opposite experience. Our Wordle today hint system reveals one clue at a time, only when you tap: first the meaning, then the vowel count, whether any letter repeats, the starting letter, and finally the ending letter. Stop the moment you can solve it yourself. Need just a nudge? The letter-peek tool reveals a single position while the other four stay hidden. And the full Wordle today answer sits behind two confirmation taps, so you can never see it by accident — not on this page, and not in search results.
What does Wordle start with today?
That's the question everyone asks after a second guess goes wrong — and it's exactly what Hint 4 answers. Tap it and we'll tell you the starting letter of today's word, nothing more. Want the last letter too? That's Hint 5. Prefer to choose which position to reveal? The five-tile peek tool lets you uncover exactly the spot you're unsure about. You decide how much help you get; the puzzle stays yours to solve.
A solver, an archive, and a free practice game
This Wordle today game hub is more than a daily answer page. Stuck mid-game with a board full of yellows and greys? Our Wordle solver turns the colors you've already revealed into a ranked list of possible words in milliseconds. Curious whether a word has ever been used? The archive lists all 1,800+ past answers — searchable, spoiler-blurred, and updated daily, with letter-frequency analysis computed from real puzzle data. And if one puzzle a day isn't enough, the practice game above gives you unlimited rounds using words from past puzzles — the perfect way to test new starting words. Play Wordle today on the NYT site, then sharpen your strategy here.
What was the Wordle today?
Missed a day, or settling a debate about last week's word? The recent-answers table above covers the last 14 days, each word blurred until you choose to reveal it. For anything older, every single puzzle since June 19, 2021 has its own dated page — with the answer, definition, difficulty rating, and that day's hints. It's the cleanest Wordle archive on the web, and it's free forever. Bookmark this page: tomorrow's hints go live the moment your next puzzle does, wherever in the world you are.

Frequently asked questions
When does Wordle reset each day?
A new Wordle goes live at midnight local time in your timezone. Because midnight rolls across the globe, players in New Zealand get the puzzle almost a full day before players on the US west coast. Our countdown above shows exactly how long until your next puzzle.
What timezone does Wordle use?
Wordle resets at midnight in your device’s local timezone — there is no single global release moment. The puzzle number is the same for everyone on a given calendar date, which is why we date every answer page.
What is today's Wordle puzzle number?
Today's puzzle (July 26, 2026) is Wordle #1863. The very first puzzle, #0, was played on June 19, 2021, and the number has increased by one every day since.
How are your hints spoiler-free?
Every clue on this page is hidden until you tap it, and we never print the answer in our page title, search snippets, or social previews. You reveal exactly as much help as you want — a gentle meaning clue first, the full solution only after two confirmation taps.
Is this site affiliated with the New York Times?
No. Free Wordle Today is an independent fan project. Wordle is owned and published by The New York Times, and we simply track the daily puzzle and build tools and guides around it. We link to the official game so you can play there first.
How often is this page updated?
The page is refreshed every day as the new puzzle goes live in the US Eastern timezone. Hints, the answer, and yesterday’s recap are all updated together, usually within minutes of the puzzle changing over.
What is the Wordle today?
Today's Wordle is puzzle #1863 (July 26, 2026) — a five-letter English word that went live at midnight in your local timezone. We never print it openly: reveal the five hints above one at a time, or tap through to the answer when you're ready for it.
What is the Wordle answer today?
The answer sits behind the two-tap reveal in the answer section above. We deliberately keep it out of the page title and search snippets so nobody gets spoiled by accident. Once revealed, you also get its definition, a difficulty rating, and a short breakdown of what made it tricky.
What does Wordle start with today?
We can tell you without spoiling the rest of the word: open Hint 4 above to reveal just the starting letter, or use the letter-peek tool to uncover any single position you like. All five hints are progressive, so you stay in control of how much you learn.
What was the Wordle today — where can I see past answers?
Yesterday's answer (July 25, 2026, puzzle #1862) is shown openly further up this page, the last 14 days are listed in the recent answers table, and our archive covers every puzzle since June 2021 — searchable by date, word, or puzzle number.
